about

Samantha Cooper (Sam, she/her) became one of over 900 defendants in the struggle to stop the line 3 (93) pipeline this past summer.

She was invited to stand with Indigenous leaders upholding their treaty rights and protecting the natural resources guaranteed to them under federal law.

Her nonviolent attempt to help honor the treaties resulted in a misdemeanor charge, which she will challenge in court with her co-defendants.

Please consider donating to The Center For Protest Law & Litigation - Line 3 Rapid Response Fund.

After spending a month in northern Minnesota, Sam created an interpolation of a song called “Tomorrow” by Miner. Her latest video single is a love note to the rights of manoomin (wild rice):

“Let The Wave” features Frank Bibeau - the Attorney in a historic rights of manoomin case unfolding in Minnesota right now.

This track also features Shara Nova (My Brightest Diamond), Jaike Spotted Wolff (Camp Migizi), Holly T. Bird (Attorney and Co-Executive Director Of Title Track), Dan Rickabus (State Of Water Podcast), Seth Bernard (Title Track Founder), and Bryan Heany (37.ENT). Please see the YouTube video for full credits.

Sam edited this video with Jon Stegenga (Humanizing Through Story) and Nathan Wright (MackinawOde).

This video single was made possible in part by a grant from the Kalamazoo Arts Council. Samantha Cooper owns 25% of this interpolation; any proceeds will be donated to the Line 3 Rapid Response Fund.

This was made to honor the water protectors from RISE Coalition, Honor The Earth, Welcome Water Protector Center, Red Lake Treaty Camp, Camp Migizi, Giniw Collective, Stop The Money Pipeline, MackinawOde, Native Roots Radio, Friends Of The Headwaters, The Bay Mills Indian Community, MI Cats, Bad River Band, Up Hell’s Creek, Indigenous Environmental Network, MN350, Kalamazoo Remembers, Great Lakes Water Protectors, Oil & Water Don’t Mix and beyond.

Special thanks to Lee Sprague, Yebishawn Oldshield, Daniel Hinmon, Kara Wiltstone, Bia, Nathan Wright and Gerardo Reyes for having me out on the water, and for sharing your joy in this video.

lyrics

Will there be better days?
Will there be better days?
Will there be better days?
Will there be better days?

It is time to stop line 3.
(It’s directly violating treaty rights.)
It’s a sinking economy.
(We can’t double down on tar sands in a climate crisis.)
There are cleaner, safer, more humane options.
(There should be no sacrifice zones, and no sacrifice people.)
We can meet our energy needs.

While we’re at it - stop line 5.
(That means no replacement tunnel, either.)
It’s past due to remove that line.
(It’s not if it spills, it’s when - check the data.)
Enbridge can’t be trusted with our water.
(Kalamazoo Remembers - Minnesota Remembers.)
We have got to remove that line.
(We have got to remove that line.)

“For the Anishinabe people, the annual wild rice harvest across the Great Lakes region is the most important, central part of our tradition, our food security and sustenance, and cultural lifeway. But wild rice, is at risk. Manoomin is threatened by climate change, mining, water pollution - and by Enbridge’s pipelines.

Wild rice is both a legal right under the rights of Manoomin, and an indicator species that reflects the health of our ecosystem. Manoomin requires abundant clean water to grow, making it especially vulnerable to oil spills.”

There’s a climate crisis now.
(We are living through climate apartheid.)
We need bolder action right now.
(Water is life)
We are nearing the end of an era.
(Stop the money pipeline.)
We have got to act right now.
(Divest from fossil fuels.)

Let the wave wash over you.
Let the wave wash over you.
(Water is life.)
All we have is us to hang onto.
(All we have is water is life.)
Let the wave (let the wave) wash over (let the wave) you.

“The UN Secretary General has called the IPCC report code red for humanity.”

We’re running out of time. (Water is life.)
We’re running out of time. (Water is life.)
Will there be better days? (Water is life.)
